Ok, now we can go out to eat.
But not in Chicago (yet). I just came back from Detroit, and people are constantly wondering why I love it out there as much as I do. It’s very simple; THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS. When anyone looks at me all weird for loving Detroit so much, I can tell immediately that they’ve never been there. It’s a really convenient, affordable getaway, and their downtown Detroit is getting sexier by the visit. One of my favorite places in downtown Detroit is not food, it’s makeuo , the Lip Bar. The makeup and bronzers are all vegan and the colors are beautiful & unique. Now back to the food. On my Labor Day visit to Detroit, I was heading back to Chicago and had a taste for pancakes (nothing new, here). I pulled up my handy dandy Yelp account that can help your entire life if you’re in a city and need something to do, places to eat, etc. Anyway, I found Brooklyn Street Local. They didn’t have a ton of vegan options, but the options they do have are delicious enough to make you reconsider going back home to Chicago. When I go to new places, I like to try a little bit of everything, and these were the 3 options I went with:
Banana walnut pancakes: I’ve never sang and danced so much eating someone else’s pancakes. I initially turned my nose up because there was no vegan butter around, and then I tasted it and the gates of heaven immediately opened with that first bite.
Four pancakes made with organic bananas, Carncross Sugarbush real maple syrup, and candied walnuts
Kale & Quinoa Salad: This salad was so refreshing. I’ve been into beets quite a bit, and all of the textures and flavors complimented each other perfectly.
Marinated raw kale, beets and carrots with apples, organic quinoa, and toasted almonds
Brooklyn Street Local Poutine : Me and potatoes are in a romantic relationship, and I was very happy to be married to this plate of poutine. This was so delicious that I lost complete control of my appetite and ate until I had to be rolled away. Yes, I added hot sauce and ketchup, because mind your business
Hand-cut fries, caramelized onions, Daiya vegan cheese, mushroom gravy
